The Association’s AGM was held in the Bowling Club Pavilion, Main St, Crumlin on Wednesday, 27 February 2008. The meeting was exceptionally well attended and represented a 100% improvement over last year’s numbers. This upsurge in interest was seen as a reflection of all the new work that had been undertaken over the past two years to upgrade the river - in particular the construction of the new fish passes and associated works.
The Chairman and Hon Secretary reviewed the activities for the year 2007. In particular, the fishing results in the months of August, September and October (normally the most prolific period for catches) had been disappointing due, at times, to the unusual / extreme weather conditions. While good numbers of dollaghan and the occasional salmon were observed in the lower stretches they quickly dispersed following heavy rains. The work done to reduce the height of the waterfall at the Crumlin Glen ‘Lep’ pool and the stretch beyond to ease the passage of fish through the river was reported to have been very successful.
The Chairman noted, however, that further construction and other works were still needed in the year ahead – particularly a realignment of the top box of the Glen fish pass and possibly other works at the entry point. A large debris shield remains to be fitted at the Mairs’ Weir fish pass. The Club is still in discussion with the Bushmills hatchery about restocking possibilities for this year.
The ever-present dangers of pollution of the river were discussed and the actions taken and pursued by the Committee in the past year were noted. The Chairman asked members to report immediately to the Environmental Heritage Service or to members of the Committee any incidents of pollutions or discharges into the river from pipes etc.
In accordance with the Rules of the Association the existing Committee stood down from office but were re-elected to serve again for another year.
Overall, this was a good meeting which the Committee hopes can be further built upon in future years – especially from younger members whose increased welcome presence this year was noted especially. |
